DEAR FRIEND,
Time to Get Ready To Go! This letter and enclosures
will provide information and guidance for a successful launch to
your International Workshops adventure.
NUTS & BOLTS
Arriving in Graz: Take a taxi from the Graz Thalerhof
airport or train station to your hotel. On July 18, the first workshop
day, between 3 and 5 p.m., go to our workshop headquarters, the Graz
Universität für Musik, Leonhardstrasse 15 and look for the
IW Welcome Desk in the courtyard. Here, an IW staff member will greet
you with a smile and a portfolio of important, useful information.
(Family members get one too!) At 5:30, we will walk in groups to the
center of Graz, Landhaus Square for our 6 p.m. Opening Ceremony. On
your own, you may catch the #1 tram from the Hotels Academia or Stoiser;
it's a lovely 20-minute walk through the Stadtpark and Old Town from
the Parkhotel; it's about a 5-minute walk from the Johann or Drei Raben.
Workshop Director Jerry Fischbach, local officials, and Austrian music
will welcome you with brief introductions, information, and a touch of
ceremony. After this brief event, you will be free to enjoy Graz for
the evening.
Mail, Fax, Phone. During the workshop, mail can be sent
directly to you at your hotel. Airmail takes 7-10 days from the USA. Letters
should be addressed as follows:

Daily Schedule. A copy of your workshop's

Programmatic Details. A list of supplies, texts and other information
pertaining to your specific workshop (Art, Choral Conducting, General Music, Orchestral Conducting, Piano, or Strings) is also enclosed. Contact Tori Hintz if you need information
on a different workshop as well. Please note that applications for
certain special opportunities (master classes, soloist recitals,
showcases, etc.) have a June 15 deadline.
THIS & THAT
Housing. This year, we are using a variety of Graz hotels.
Please note your hotel's mailing address, telephone number, and fax
number; and provide these to anyone who may wish to contact you
during your stay in Graz. Double rooms at the Academia are twin-bedded.
We hope you will be very comfortable during your workshop stay.
Meals. All hotel options include breakfast. For
lunches and dinners, we encourage you to explore Graz for a variety of
markets, cafés, and restaurants providing options for every taste and
budget. We will also have a small café onsite. On July 19, we'll
enjoy the Governor's Welcoming Reception and on the final workshop
evening, the Mayor of Graz will sponsor an Auf Wiedersehen party, with
finger foods of Styrian specialties.
Workshop Headquarters. We are happy to be welcomed for the
fifth time by the friendly staff of one of Austria's leading schools of
music, the Graz Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst
(Graz University for Music and Theatre Arts). The school consists of the
Palais Meran, Stables, and 4-story Neubau, with lovely grounds and
courtyard. Please be considerate guests, clean up litter, treat pianos
respectfully, and observe No Smoking at all times.
Getting Around Graz. Graz is a lushly green city with many
beautiful parks, marketplaces, historical buildings, and museums.
Enclosed is the 2004 Graz city guide, which has a map and places of
interest indicated. We will have weekly books of tram tickets for sale
at the workshop and you will find riding the trams to be convenient and
fun. There is a tram stop right at IW Headquarters. There is also a
taxi stand outside the Universität, across from the Parkhotel, and
if several share a taxi, the cost of the short ride is quite low per person.
